3 Tips on How to Start Playing Padel

Padel is one of the fastest-growing sports in the world, with over one million players in the United States. It is incredibly social, fast-paced, exceptionally easy to pick up, and genuinely fun from the very first session.

1. Understand the Padel Court and Equipment          

A padel court measures 20 × 10 m, about one-third the size of a standard tennis court, and is surrounded by glass or plexiglass walls and electro-welded metal mesh fencing, typically 4 m and 3 m high. The walls play an active role in keeping the ball in play during matches. 

Players use solid, stringless padel rackets with a perforated surface (with holes rather than strings) and a low compression ball that is very similar in appearance to tennis balls. The lack of strings gives a lot of control.

If you have played tennis or squash before, padel will feel wonderfully familiar in a few different ways. Like tennis, it uses the same scoring system of 15, 30, 40, and games and matches are often played as best of three sets. 

Like squash, the back wall and glass walls come into play regularly and add a unique geometric element to every rally. Combining elements of tennis, playing off the sides, and rebounds becomes essential.

But padel is genuinely its own sport, and it is widely considered much easier to learn than tennis and squash. The smaller court and the cooperative nature of the partner-play format make it incredibly welcoming for beginners of all ages, ensuring longer rallies and less pressure to hit with raw power.

2. Learn the Rules, Scoring System, and Golden Point

Padel Racket 

Getting started with padel does not require a massive financial investment, but having the proper equipment makes a real difference when you step on the padel court. 

A padel racket is your most essential piece of equipment. Unlike traditional tennis rackets, a padel racket features a solid frame without strings, often incorporating fiberglass for extra durability and comfort. 

The hitting surface is perforated with holes, which helps tremendously with ball control and reduces air resistance as you swing.

Racket shape also affects performance. Beginners should choose a padel racket with a round or teardrop shape. Round rackets are ideal for beginners because they offer a larger sweet spot, better balance, and more forgiveness on off-center hits. Teardrop rackets provide a balance of power and control and are better suited for players as they progress.

Lighter rackets improve agility, while heavier ones generate more power. Softer materials enhance feel, and fiberglass constructions remain a popular choice for comfort and control. 

Padel Balls 

Padel balls look almost exactly like regular tennis balls but possess slightly less internal pressure. This specific design gives the balls a softer, more controlled bounce that is perfectly suited to the enclosed court environment, preventing the ball from flying too fast.

Footwear matters much more than most beginners expect. You will need dedicated padel court shoes or tennis shoes with strong lateral support, excellent cushioning, and stability to help your feet maintain balance as you move side to side quickly and safely.

3. Take the First Step Onto the Court

Padel is delightfully straightforward once you learn the basic padel rules and the scoring system. Understanding the basic rules of the game is essential, as this ensures fairness for all players.          

The game is almost always played in a doubles format, meaning there are four players on the padel court at once, with a team of two on both sides of the net. To start a point, the server must bounce the ball on the ground behind the service line. The serve is always underarm or underhand and must be struck at or below waist level.

The server hits the ball diagonally across the net, aiming into the opponent's court and specifically landing it in the opposite service box. Just like a tennis match, the receiving team must let the ball bounce once in the opposite service box before returning it. The lines marking the service boxes dictate the serve. 

If the server makes a mistake and the ball hits the net or lands outside the service boxes, it is a fault. Two missed serves in a row result in a double fault, costing the server the point. 

Players switch sides of the court during the match to ensure fairness. The service boxes on both sides help structure the game. Serving from alternating sides is mandatory, and the sides of the court must be defended.

The scoring system padel uses is the same scoring system as tennis, with points counted as 15, 30, 40, and games. A team must win six games with a two-game lead to take a set, and most matches are played as best-of-three sets. 

If a set reaches 6–6, a tie-break is played. Points are counted sequentially, and the first team to reach seven points with a two-point lead wins. Tie-breaks can be intense, so staying focused and composed is important.

Many padel matches also use the golden point rule. When the score reaches 40-40, a single decisive point is played instead of requiring a lead of two points. The receiving team chooses which side to receive, and whoever wins the point wins the game. Many players enjoy the golden point for its excitement and fast resolution.
